about

Craig wrote the piano and synth parts of this song while we were in New York City for a residency last October, which was fitting because I thought the piano felt very old school New York, like the score for The Seven Year Itch or something. Once home we created the rest of the instrumental parts, and I wrote the chorus, but the instrumental parts were so exciting musically that it was tough to build lyrics around them. Finally we settled on this speaking part instead, and 5 or 6 musical mad-libs later we created this strange story. Frenchie referenced the scene were Lois Lane flies with Superman from the 1978 version as inspiration for the vocals, and once I listened back I realized that the lady from Einstein on the Beach must have snuck into my brain, too. When we started recording this song everyone was thinking "this is either going to be really really good or really really bad," and I think none of us really knew how much we would end up loving it.

We made this video with one of our closest friends and collaborators Kate Blaising. It all happened very quickly-- less than two weeks from the time we decided to make a video, we were in Originator Studios for 30 hours straight filming. Kate created a true dream team with Jonathan Mayo-Buttry and Kelly Webster, and we met almost every day for a week, brainstorming ideas, scouring the city for all things red, hot glueing and painting props, calling all our friends to help, and putting together shot lists.

I have been feeling very red lately, which is especially strange because I have avoided the color for the last 10 years or so, always dodging it and being overwhelmed by it. But I'll always remember this season as my red season--it has been calling me, popping up in my periphery and actually kind of insisting it's way into my life. During this particular time, I got a red coat from the always magical Wonder Wears the Gold; I spent a few days in the desert with bright red hair in a sea of red at Cherry on Top in Marfa; and I wrestled the bright red ropes of space and time for this video. A perfect season for overcoming fears and expanding boundaries.

lyrics

Slipping through time
where the something meets the nothing.
Where no sunlight touches.
Living here--in the unnatural order.
A spot of life in the undisturbed silence.

Moving to a new dimension.

A natural thing is waking me up letting me know it's ok to let go.

A vision of light shows a silhouette of something strange.
Ripping through time.
A natural thing, just disappearing into your secret place.

Moving to a new dimension.

Hello (hello)
I wish you were a tall drink (cosmic poison arrow)
We should call a doctor.
My fever dreams illuminate.

I loved you at hello (hello)
I wish you were a tall drink (sipping on a heartbreak)
We should call a doctor.
I am melting into space.

A natural thing is waking me up letting me know it's ok to let go.

I loved you at hello (hello)
I wish you were a tall drink (cosmic poison arrow)
We should call a doctor.
My fever dreams illuminate.

I loved you at hello (hello)
I wish you were a tall drink (sipping on a heartbreak)
We should call a doctor.
I am melting into space.

about

Calliope Musicals Austin, Texas

Calliope Musicals exist in multiple mind-bending dimensions. The larger-than-life psychedelic pop collective, led by Carrie Fussell, wows concert-goers with a blast of interactive secondhand glam and woos music listeners alike with invigorating avant-garde anthems. Standouts amongst their Austin, TX peers, Calliope Musicals were hailed by NPR as a “perennial SXSW favorite." ... more
