about

"fear this body" was written by the water in milwaukee during a remarkably challenging tour. i was in a particularly low spot, and i was noticing that throughout my life, i have always taken arms against my body in various ways; some culturally conditioned, and perhaps some that just existed inside me naturally somewhere. i was always finding some way to see my body as my enemy. once i thought about that for a little bit, it made me sad, and i started to cry. my body can do some really special stuff (i ran a whole mile the other day?!?)--honestly everyone's can, we just take it for granted sometimes. our bodies can care for families and even make food(?!), they can move or be remarkably still, they can move large objects and swim and bend and mend; they can even just exist and take up space on a spinning rock in the very middle of infinity, which is maybe the most miraculous thing of all. although it became second nature to see my body as some sort of obstacle to overcome, i know logically that my body is pretty bad ass, and that she can do some pretty incredible things. this is a song that helps me feel what i know to be true.
you know who you are: i hope it reminds you of how powerful and worthy you are, and may you scare the hell out of anyone who tries to take that from you.

lyrics

I will not fear this body; I will not doubt its power.

My soul came straight from space
Plays house behind this face;
It’s only my home for now.

Till I grow weary of
This body like a glove
I’m saving up for summertime.

I will not fear this body; I will not doubt its power.

Was given legs to run
Up mountains toward the sun
‘Cause freedom is what I crave.

And I will reach the day
When my mouth moves to say
“I’ve loved you in all your glory.”
Oh, I will not doubt your power.

I will not fear this body; I will not doubt its power.

about

Calliope Musicals Austin, Texas

Calliope Musicals exist in multiple mind-bending dimensions. The larger-than-life psychedelic pop collective, led by Carrie Fussell, wows concert-goers with a blast of interactive secondhand glam and woos music listeners alike with invigorating avant-garde anthems. Standouts amongst their Austin, TX peers, Calliope Musicals were hailed by NPR as a “perennial SXSW favorite." ... more
